‘A Life in Songs’ tells the story of Mark Knopfler the former leader of Dire Straits. Knopfler by his own admission has never been comfortable being interviewed on camera. Yet in this intimate portrait he opens up about his childhood days growing up in Glasgow and Newcastle, and how he went from playing the folk clubs on Tyneside to worldwide success with Dire Straits. He also discussed why at the height of the bands success he decided to break up the group. As Knopfler says for him it was never about being famous, it was ‘always been about the songs’. In this clip he demonstrates how he came to write the classic Romeo and Juliet one of his most famous and popular songs.
